UNE's Global Initiatives Program partners with Deering High School

Â鶹´«Ã½ (UNE) Global Initiatives Program has forged a partnership with Deering High School in Portland that will make new learning opportunities available to Deering students and faculty.

As a result of the new partnership, Deering students will be able to attend lectures by international experts at UNE's Portland campus.  Â鶹´«Ã½students who have travelled abroad will also share their experiences with Deering students.  Â鶹´«Ã½faculty will provide professional development for Deering'\s staff on topics such as the importance of developing a global outlook.

"We are very fortunate to have a college program focusing on international affairs located just a short walk away," said Deering Principal Ira Waltz.  "Our students' education will be enriched by this partnership."

Anouar Majid, Ph.D., associate provost for global initiatives and founding director of the UNE's Center for Global Humanities, added that a real partnership between the two institutions is long overdue.  "Â鶹´«Ã½is committed to supporting all creative educational and cultural endeavors in our communities," Majid said.  "But in the case of Deering, it's just natural.  We have shared the same street - Stevens Avenue - for more than century.  We are now ready to share our global resources with our neighbors."

In the future, Deering students may be able to attend some Â鶹´«Ã½classes for college credit, and they may have opportunities to participate in UNE's international travel programs, including UNE's new campus in Tangier, Morocco.
