David Sandmire and David Johnson interviewed for article in ā€˜Men’s Health’

David Sandmire, M.D., professor of physiology in the Department of Biological Sciences, and David Johnson, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, were quoted in an article, ā€œSeven Essential Blood Tests You Should Have,ā€ published in Men’s Health on June 23, 2014 and republished on Fox News.

Sandmire and Johnson, co-authors of Medical Tests That Can Save Your Life, delivered advice in sections of the article pertaining to C-reactive protein (CRP) and prostate-specific antigen (PSN).

ā€œIf your CRP as well as your total cholesterol is high,ā€ said Sandmire, ā€œyou’re at an even greater risk of having a heart attack than you would be with either risk factor by itself.ā€

Johnson noted that ā€œPSA testing is not an exact science, because factors external to the prostate can cause the marker to rise,ā€ but he does suggest yearly PSA testing at 50 (or 40 for African-Americans) for comparison purposes.
