ā€˜Journal Tribuneā€™ reports on UNEā€™s latest National Science Foundation grant

The October 3, 2014 issue of the Journal Tribune featured an article on UNEā€™s recent award of more than $636,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a project aimed at engaging science, technology, engineering and mathematic s (STEM) students by using innovative research projects on the Saco River.

Markus Frederich, Ph.D., assistant department chair and associate professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, is directing the project, titled ā€œTURBO: The Undergraduate Saco River Biodiversity Observatoryā€”A Long-Term Ecological Research-Style Research Experience to Enhance STEM Education.ā€

The article announced the award along with news that another NSF grant was received by Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay, Maine. 

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, was quoted from a prepared statement announcing the grants.ā€œThese are fascinating projects to further our knowledge and exploration of the world around us in many ways,ā€ she said. ā€œMy congratulations to both institutions.ā€
