‘Mainebiz’ features article on UNE’s College of Dental Medicine as a remedy for state’s dentist shortage

Mainebiz’s May 5, 2014 edition features an article on the need for dentists in Maine and discusses UNE’s College of Dental Medicine (CDM) as a key component to solving the issue.

James Hanley, D.M.D., dean of CDM, was interviewed and photographed for the article.  He explained that dental students who study at Â鶹´«Ã½may stay in the state after graduating, which will increase the number of Maine’s practicing dentists, at a time when more and more of Maine’s dentists reach retiring age.

Hanley also pointed out that Maine’s geographical distribution of dentists is more problematic than its overall number of dentists, noting that the southern part of the state has a disproportionately large number of dentists compared with other, more rural areas.

UNE’s College of Dental Medicine will graduate its first class in 2017.  Twenty-four of the 64 students are from Maine.
