'Boston Globe' reports on promotion of cape shark cuisine as 鶹ýand Sodexo roll out Sharck Bite nuggets

On October 28, 2015, the Boston Globe reported on the 鶹ý’s participation in a relatively new region wide effort by New England seafood interests to support the ecological management of ocean life the local seafood industry by promoting dogfish for dinner.

The article, titled “Spiny dogfish gets a marketing makeover,” discusses a recent push in New England to market the underutilized spiny dogfish species, under the new and more appetizing name of “cape shark,” as a dining option.  According to the article, cape shark is being promoted to distributors and university systems and mentions the 鶹ý as an example.

Referring to a federal NOAA grant that was originally organized by James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences and is currently being conducted by Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., Henry L. & Grace Doherty professor and chair of the Department of Marine Sciences and director of the Marine Science Center, along with Adam St. Gelais, 鶹ýassistant research scientist and coordinator of the SEAFISH program, the article also credits 鶹ýwith “gathering nutritional information about the fish.”

The publication of the article coincides with UNE’s Sharck Bites roll out event, a launch of Sodexo dining service’s new menu item, cape shark nuggets, on October 28.
