鶹ýHistology and Imaging Core manager publishes histology protocol with Corning Inc.
Peter Caradonna ‘13, B.S., manager of the Histology and Imaging Core at the 鶹ý, has been working with Corning, Inc. to develop histological processing methods for some of the company’s cell culture products called Transwell® membrane inserts.
Transwell® inserts are described as convenient and easy-to-use filter insert systems for growing a variety of cell types in culture. The Histology and Imaging Core was contacted by Corning, located in Kennebunk, Maine, to develop a reliable and reproducible method for processing and imaging cells grown in Transwell® inserts of various plastic compositions. Caradonna took the lead on the project and was able to work with Corning to develop a universal protocol that can be applied to any Transwell® membrane composition.
Histology and Imaging Core Director Amy Davidoff, Ph.D., said, “Corning approached us because their customers reported processing difficulties with certain membrane/solvent combinations. Caradonna utilized his expertise in histology and chemistry to optimize the appropriate solutions for each filter material, and confirmed his protocol by processing, sectioning, staining and imaging cells grown on the Transwell® inserts. Caradonna's work is exceptional and is featured in the company’s protocol.”
The Histology and Imaging Core is supported by a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence grant (NIGMS grant number P20GM103643) at the 鶹ý.
