Marilyn Gugliucci demonstrates leadership in geriatrics at national conference

Marilyn R. Gugliucci, Ph.D., represented the 鶹ý College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Division of Geriatric Medicine at the 69th Annual Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Scientific Meeting. Gugliucci gave an invited presentation and participated in five juried presentations.

The GSA Emerging Scholars and Professional Organization (ESPO) leaders invited Gugliucci to be a presenter at their ESPO Pre-Conference Workshop, “Tools for Building a Solid Career in Gerontology.” Gugliucci’s presentation was titled, “Networking Toolkit: Complete with Set of Wings.” The workshop was designed for students and emerging professionals who were looking to gain skills in various areas of professional development, including networking and mentoring, using advanced research methodologies, selecting an ideal position and building an interdisciplinary career in aging.

Gugliucci also chaired two symposia and provided oral presentations. In the first, “Accreditation for Gerontology Education Council: Inaugural Year Accomplishments,” she gave an oral presentation titled, “Accreditation for Gerontology Education Council (AGEC) Organizational and Procedural Plan.” Her co-presenters included Janet Frank, D.P.H. (UCLA) and Harvey Sterns, Ph.D. (University of Akron). Gugliucci served on the leadership team with Frank and Sterns to create the first accrediting organization (AGEC) for college and university gerontology programs across the globe at the associate, baccalaureate and master degree levels. The second symposium, “Palliative Care and End of Lifeincluded four oral presentations including one from Guglicci’s on her research titled, “48 Hour Hospice Home Immersion Project: Life Altering Medical Education.”

Gugliucci’s three Poster presentations included, “Review and Reflections of Two-Way Mentoring Switch Project,” “Design Considerations for Falls Prevention Interventions for Older Adults With Vision Impairments” and “MOTIVATE Project: Qualitative Findings Support Resident Oral Health Care at Maine Nursing Homes.”
