UNE’s Collyn Baeder and Zoe Hull receive awards for "Visual Voices" project

The Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s Collyn Baeder, M.P.H., assistant clinical professor and internship coordinator for Health, Wellness, and Occupational Studies, and Zoe Hull, M.P.H., Program Manager for the gave a poster presentation at the in Denver, Colorado.

Their poster presentation, titled, "Visual Voices: An Arts-Based Participatory Research Methodology for Community Empowerment," covered a research project they conducted in spring 2015 with older adult participants from the  in Portland. Specifically, they discussed how the experience of participating in the Visual Voices project impacted their participants, based on quantitative pre- and post-project survey data and qualitative data from project transcripts. Preliminary findings suggest that the arts-based methodology of Visual Voices was a positive, empowering experience for the participants, supporting the value of continued investigation of the methodology with this population. Co-investigators on the project were UNE  alumni Michaela Hoffman, Adrian Jung, Rebecca Masterjohn, and Virginia Sedarski.

Baeder and Hull's poster abstract was nominated for presentation at the APHA Annual Meeting by the , in which they were inducted as members while completing their Master of Public Health degrees at UNE. The then reviewed the nominated abstracts and made the final selections. Baeder and Hull were presented certificates and cash prizes at an awards ceremony held by the National Chapter during the APHA Annual Meeting, along with the other selected presenters.
