Â鶹´«Ã½students meet with Portland community health workers

Community cultural exchange

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Westbrook College of Health Professions Office of Service Learning and the Office of Intercultural Student Engagement recently sponsored a cultural health exchange between community health workers and Â鶹´«Ã½students.

A community health worker is a person who, with or without compensation, is a liaison and provides cultural mediation between health care, social services and the community. They are a trusted member, and have a close understanding of, the ethnicity, language, socio-economic status and life experiences of the community served, helping people to gain access to needed services.

About 20 Â鶹´«Ã½students across academic programs attended the dinner, held at Maine Access Immigrant Network in Portland, discussing the issues facing the immigrant and refugee communities in Portland.
