The Motherhouse, a former convent converted into housing for people 55 and older, is located just down the street from UNE’s Portland Campus.
鶹ýhas an office and a classroom in the building, where master's candidates in social work get practice by working with the residents.
"They're studying me, and I don't mind being studied,” said Peter Dohan, a cheerful retired surgical pathologist.
The partnership is featured in in an article about the blended benefits of campus life and senior services.
"The synergy is here,” Tom Meuser, Ph.D., director of the Center for Excellence in Aging and Health, told AARP Magazine. "We have a university just up the street that focuses a lot on aging and health."
Jim Haynes, president of the National Continuing Care Resident Association, tells AARP Magazine university-connected facilties like this are a “win-win for everybody.”
